Since 1991 Castillo Butters has directed the investigations at the San José de Moro site, having as objective the study of ceremonial and funerary practices of pre-Hispanic societies that inhabited the Jequetepeque Valley and the evolution of their material culture. These studies have focused on certain singular manifestations like the fineline and polychrome ceramics of the Late Moche Period. Likewise, he has developed topics such as the Moche collapse, the impact of the Wari and Cajamarca cultures, and the transition to the Lambayeque and Chimú periods.

He has written numerous articles relating to funerary and ceremonial practices of the Moche, the Priestesses of San José de Moro, the role of women in northern coastal pre-Hispanic societies, representations of warriors in Moche art, and the Sacrifice Ceremony. Currently, he has centered his investigation on the forms of political organization and ideological power as a mechanism of integration and maintenance of social differences within the societies of Jequetepeque during the first millennium of our era.
